Trump Gets Good News in Key Battleground State – Harris Struggles to Keep Up
It’s looking like good news for former President Donald Trump as a new battleground state poll shows him pulling ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in North Carolina. The poll, conducted by Elon College just before the Democratic National Convention, has Trump leading Harris by a tight margin of 46% to 44%. While the race is close, this edge could make all the difference as the election heats up.
But let’s not forget—the majority of voters still disapprove of both candidates. “Our favorability data shows Trump and Harris with competitive levels of support,” said Professor Jason Husser, director of the Elon University Poll. It’s clear that both candidates have their work cut out for them in the coming weeks.
Diving into the numbers, Trump’s strongest support comes from men, with a solid 50% approval rating. Harris, however, is struggling with this group, pulling only 39% approval. Among women, Harris has a slight edge at 47%, while 43% of women view Trump favorably. The numbers show that Trump is especially popular with voters who don’t have a four-year college degree—he’s got 52% approval from this group, compared to 43% disapproval.
When it comes to independent voters, both Trump and Harris face challenges. Trump has a 35% approval rating with independents, while Harris is close behind at 34%. This means North Carolina is shaping up to be a major battleground, with both candidates needing to pull out all the stops to win over these crucial voters.
“North Carolina’s electoral votes remain up for grabs by either party, but winning those votes will involve navigating a divided, complex, and engaged electorate,” Husser explained. With the state having been won by Republican presidential candidates for three elections in a row, it’s clear that both sides are taking this race seriously.
While Trump has a slight advantage in this poll, other surveys suggest that Harris is still in the game. A recent poll from High Point University shows Harris with a razor-thin lead in North Carolina, ahead by just 3 points among registered voters and 2 points among likely voters. And according to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average, Harris is barely leading Trump by just one-tenth of a percentage point.
But let’s not forget the boost Trump received just this week during a visit to a Vietnamese restaurant in Falls Church, Virginia. The 45th president, accompanied by U.S. Senate candidate Hung Cao, was greeted with raucous cheers and applause as he entered Truong Tien Vietnamese Restaurant. The visit came after Trump and Cao laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, honoring the 13 service members who lost their lives during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan under Biden’s administration.
As Trump entered the restaurant, the crowd couldn’t contain their excitement. “Somehow, I don’t know what it is—you’ll have to explain it—the Vietnamese community loves me, and I love them,” Trump said, prompting even louder cheers and chants of “USA! USA! USA!” Trump didn’t miss the chance to compliment his Senate candidate, Hung Cao, saying, “I love his name—Hung Cao. I love that name, and that name alone should get you elected.”
Trump’s connection with the people was evident as he signed autographs and mingled with supporters. One person told him, “We will fight for you, sir,” while another shouted, “We need you for the next four years.” It’s moments like these that show why Trump remains a powerful force in American politics.
As we head into the final stretch of the election, all eyes are on North Carolina and other battleground states. With polls showing a tight race, both Trump and Harris will need to rally their bases and win over undecided voters if they want to come out on top. The next few weeks will be crucial, and the outcome of this election could determine the future of the nation.
